What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a process that brightens teeth by removing stains and altering the natural color. Teeth can be whitened through procedures at the dentist’s office, at-home whitening kits issued by a dentist, or over-the-counter products.

Most whitening processes can remove surface stains that may be caused by smoking or by drinking beverages such as coffee, tea, or wine. The most potent methods can usually lighten the tooth’s natural color, which may become darker for several reasons. The two most common are erosion of the tooth’s outer enamel layer, which exposes the underlying dark layers of tissue; and medication, which can alter the pigment of the entire tooth.

What are the Side Effects of Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening has few side effects. Teeth can become sensitive for a short period after treatment. Also, if the gums are exposed to the whitening gel, they can become a little irritated.
