What are the Different Methods of Teeth Whitening?
Dentists provide several methods of teeth whitening.
Teeth that have had a root canal performed sometimes respond poorly to traditional – called vital – whitening methods. For these teeth, some dentists offer non-vital whitening. In this procedure, the dentist inserts a whitening agent into the tooth and seals it with a temporary filling. The tooth is left this way for several days, and the whitening occurs from the inside out. It is usually quite effective at eliminating most discolorations.
For most teeth, however, some form of vital whitening is usually the best option. Prior to these treatments, the dentist performs several initial steps. The dentist will always check for cavities and insert fillings into teeth that need them. The whitening agents that are used in most procedures can eat through decay in teeth and cause a lot of pain if they contact the nerve within the tooth. The dentist always cleans the teeth. Most dentists also check for exposed roots, which are caused by a receding gumline. The roots of teeth do not respond to whitening.
